One of South Africa’s key goals is to reduce its reliance on coal-fired power stations. BESS supports this transition by making renewable energy sources more efficient and dependable, ultimately leading to a greener and more sustainable future.
Replicating successes from our hybrid solar and battery storage projects at Kenhardt, we will proceed to construct one of Africa’s first and largest standalone dispatchable BESS systems. The project is located near Kathu, Northern Cape, close to high power demand centres.
The South African Government supports BESS as a strategic part of its energy plans, managed through the Battery Energy Storage IPP Procurement Programme. Brazil, India, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, and Lithuania have all launched BESS systems or are in the process of doing so. In 2023, Eskom opened the Hex BESS site at Worcester in the Western Cape.
BESS enables efficient renewable- energy integration and use, storing excess power during periods of overgeneration and releasing it when renewable generation is low. This reduces energy waste, mitigates renewable energy independent power producers’ curtailment, and ensures a reliable power supply.
